KALAUPAPA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK: The Kalaupapa Peninsula is a place unique in geology and history. You will not find another place like it anywhere on earth, and you will never forget the experience of seeing it and learning about its tragic past and complicated present situation. It is so breathtaking, major movies scenes have been shot there.3,000 ft. cliffs surround the peninsula of Kalaupapa. There are no roads reaching Kalaupapa-–the only access is by trail, boat, or airplane. A major supply barge comes just once a year to the peninsula (big party!), and perishable goods are flown in weekly. Bring your own lunch, you are not allowed to purchase these precious supplies!

Imagine riding a mule down the highest sea cliffs in the world to a tiny leper colony, known as Kalupapa. This remote settlement, its people and Father Damien are a major part of the tapestry of Hawaii's history. In the cool Moloka'i uplands, a pack of mules prepare for the day's ride down to the village of Kaluapapa. You will be riding down 1,700 feet of the most spectacular and highest sea cliffs in the world. The boundless beauty you will experience as you transverse 26 switchbacks leaves most absolutely breathless. No worries, these mules are personally trained by company owner Buzzy Sproat. He is considered one of Hawaii's foremost experts on mules. Once you arrive in Kaluapapa a bus will take you on a tour where you will learn about the leper colony, its people, incredible tales of struggle and human suffering, along with stories of courage and love. You'll see the church and gravesite of Father Damien, the heroic Belgium Priest who loved and served this colony of outcasts.
